Delayed Cord Clamping
What is delayed cord clamping?
It is a process where after the delivery of the baby, instead of clamping the cord immediately, we can wait ~1-3 minutes before the cord is clamped.
Why is it done?
Once the baby is birthed, the blood flow in the umbilical cord continues for a little while. When we allow a delay to the cord being clamped, we are providing the baby with an opportunity to receive more blood. This is good because it can increase the iron stores for the baby for at least the next 3-6 months.
Can it be done at every birth?
There are some births that are unable to have delayed cord clamping, where usually there is concerns with the baby’s wellbeing or concerns with bleeding for mom.
How do I know if I can have it done?
It would be best to speak to your healthcare provider but generally, if there was uncomplicated labour and birth, I would be happy to do so.
